Quizlet alternatives picked for when Learn mode and practice tests run out

Knowt says its Learn mode is free for all flashcard sets, an unlimited number of times. Quizlet Plus stops at 20 Learn rounds a month and costs $35.99 when you pay for the whole year.

If Learn runs out on you, Knowt is the closest swap. Anki is the free pick for the long run. Brainscape or Mochi fit a small yearly bill.

Quizlet's Trustpilot page shows a 1.4 score from 661 reviews.

A September 2026 review names ads, constant upgrade prompts, and a three practice test limit as the reasons to leave.

The short answer

  • Knowt: Learn mode is free for every set. Its paid plan, Ultra, costs $149.99 for the year. That is $105 more than Quizlet Plus Unlimited.

  • Anki: free on computer and Android. The iPhone app costs $24.99.

  • Brainscape: the free plan includes spaced repetition. Pro lists $7.99 a month.

Why students leave Quizlet

The Quizlet Help Center says free users can "study with Learn for free for a limited number of rounds per flashcard set." It gives no number.

Test works the same way. A free account gets one practice test for each flashcard set.

Paid plans have caps too. Quizlet lists 3 practice tests, 3 Q&A or textbook solutions, and 20 Learn rounds each month on Plus.

Plus Unlimited removes those caps.

How to move your Quizlet sets

Only the creator can export a set from Quizlet. The Quizlet Help Center says you cannot export a set you copied from another user.

The Knowt Help Center says to make a copy of a set you do not own, then export the copy.

The two pages disagree, so try one set first.

  1. Log in to Quizlet and open Your library.

  2. Open the set, select the More menu, then Export.

  3. Pick how terms and definitions are arranged, then select Copy text.

  4. Paste the text into the import box of the new app. Use the same separators.

Quizlet does not export images. Each tool then takes the text its own way:

  • Knowt has a Chrome extension that imports a set from its Quizlet page. Knowt's help page says the extension can stop working when Quizlet blocks it, and it gives a manual import for pasted text.

  • Gizmo imports a set from its Quizlet link with Magic Import. The free plan makes you wait 20 minutes between imports.

  • Anki imports plain text files with fields split by commas, semicolons or tabs.

  • Brainscape's free plan lists import for existing flashcards.

Free Learn and Test through a teacher's class

If your teacher uses Quizlet, ask whether your sets sit in a class.

The Quizlet Help Center says invited class members get free access to Learn and Test for the flashcard sets in that class.

Check this before you pay or switch.

Which one fits you

  • If Learn mode is the only thing you miss, start with Knowt.

  • If you want a free tool for months of exam prep, use Anki on a computer or Android.

  • If you study on an iPhone and do not want to pay $24.99 for Anki, use Knowt, whose Learn page lists an iOS app, or Mochi, which lists iOS.

  • If your notes sit in PDFs or lectures, look at RemNote, Quizgecko, or Studyflash.

  • If you want a plain tool with no AI, use Anki.

  • If you want a small yearly bill, Mochi Pro at $60 and Brainscape Pro at $95.88 sit below Knowt Ultra at $149.99.

  • If you teach and want class games, look at Kahoot, Gimkit, Blooket or Wayground.

Questions students ask

Why is Quizlet no longer free?

Quizlet still has a free plan, but it limits Learn and Test. A free account gets a limited number of Learn rounds and one practice test on each flashcard set.

Quizlet's pages give no reason for the change.

What is the best Quizlet alternative that is actually free?

Knowt is the closest free match, because its Learn mode is free for every set. Anki, Mochi, and Brainscape also have free plans.

Anki is free on computer and Android only, and the iPhone app costs $24.99.

Is Quizlet or Anki better?

Anki is better if you want a free tool for long study on a computer or an Android phone.

Quizlet works in a browser and in iOS and Android apps, and its free plan limits Learn and Test. Anki costs $24.99 on iPhone.

Is Knowt free?

Yes. Knowt's Basic plan costs nothing, and Learn mode is free for every set. Ultra costs $149.99 when you pay for the whole year and adds an ad free experience and AI tools.

Is there a Quizlet alternative without AI?

Anki is the plain pick, because its page lists no AI tools. Brainscape, Mochi, and Quizlet all list AI tools in their plans.

Can I make flashcards from a PDF or lecture notes?

Yes, with several tools. RemNote Pro with AI makes flashcards, quizzes, and summaries from a PDF and costs $216 for the year. Quizgecko turns uploaded files into quizzes and flashcards.

Studyflash makes cards from a lecture script. Knowt Ultra adds an AI PDF summarizer.

Which one to pick

Pick Knowt if Learn mode is the problem and you want to keep studying the same way. Pick Anki if you want a free tool for the long run.

Pick Mochi or Brainscape if you want a small yearly bill. Export one set from Quizlet first and paste it into the new app. Run a Learn round on it before you move the rest.
