Profound alternatives, Picked for teams priced out of the $399 tier

I priced six Profound alternatives against the 399 dollar tier: Otterly for less, AthenaHQ for a free plan, Ahrefs Brand Radar if you already pay for Ahrefs.

Profound alternatives, Picked for teams priced out of the $399 tier

If price is the whole problem, start with Otterly AI. Here's why. It tracks four AI engines from 29 dollars a month, less than a third of Profound's real entry point.

If you already pay for Ahrefs, turn on Brand Radar before you buy anything new; custom prompt tracking starts at 50 dollars a month, and some of it comes free with an existing plan. Everyone else in this list sits between those two, priced and mapped below.

Profound is a monitoring platform that tells brands how they show up inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and other AI answers, the space people now call answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO).

After its Starter plan capped me at 50 tracked prompts for the second month running, across the two client accounts I manage AI visibility for, I went looking at what else was out there. Gone by the third week.

What I found first: Profound's own pricing page lists a free trial on the Growth plan, a detail worth knowing before you assume you have to pay to test it.

Why teams look past Profound

The 99 dollar a month figure is the Starter plan. It tracks ChatGPT only. Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews sit behind Growth at 399 dollars a month, a jump of roughly 4 times the price for 2 times the tracked prompts.

Profound has no dedicated multi account structure, so managing several clients means separate logins and separate bills.

Smaller teams that just want a free Profound alternative to test the idea first have almost nothing to look at on Profound's own site, since only Growth publishes a trial at all.

The Profound Alternatives, priced against Profound's own numbers

Otterly AI.

Lite plan, 29 dollars a month, 15 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. Otterly is the plan to open if the 99 dollar Starter price was already a stretch.

Fifteen prompts sounds thin next to Profound's 50, but Otterly tracks four engines out of the gate instead of one, and Claude can be added for a few dollars more instead of forcing a jump to a 399 dollar tier.

Ahrefs Brand Radar.

Custom prompt tracking from 50 dollars a month, or included at no extra cost inside an existing Ahrefs plan. If your team already pays for Ahrefs for keyword and backlink work, Brand Radar is close to free money.

It watches AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot, and Custom Prompts adds Claude.

Ahrefs CMO Tim Soulo has made the case that "AI visibility is still mostly SEO with the same tactics," which is worth checking against your own account before you assume you need a whole new tool.

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit.

99 dollars a month per domain, tracking ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, and Perplexity. This one matches Profound's advertised Starter price almost to the dollar. Same price.

Four engines instead of one, plus 25 custom prompts. If Semrush already runs your SEO reporting, this keeps everything under one login instead of paying for two dashboards that don't talk to each other.

SE Ranking.

Core plan, 129 dollars a month billed yearly, 100 daily prompts across AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, and ChatGPT. SE Ranking folds AI visibility into a plan that also runs rank tracking and site audits.

For teams that came looking for a Profound alternative but actually need a full SEO toolkit with AI tracking bolted on, this is the plan that avoids paying for two separate subscriptions.

Scrunch AI.

Starter plan, 250 dollars a month billed yearly, tracking ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, and Meta, all from the entry tier.

Scrunch is the closest match to Profound in raw engine coverage, and it beats Growth on price while including Claude from day one instead of gating it.

A 7 day free trial needs no credit card, which answers the free trial question more plainly than Profound's own pricing page does.

AthenaHQ.

Essential tier is free with 300 credits included; Starter runs 295 dollars a month for 3,600 credits and 10 tracked AI models. Athena is the real answer to "is there a free Profound alternative?" since Essential isn't a time limited trial; it's a standing free plan.

The jump to Starter is steep. Worth it, though. It buys engine coverage, including DeepSeek and Meta AI, that even Profound's Enterprise tier doesn't list by name.

What happens to your prompt history and baselines if you leave Profound

If you're actually planning a switch, this is the question that matters most: what happens to your data. Profound's Master Subscription Agreement, section 10.3, says Profound will "promptly return or delete Customer Data" after termination, with three exceptions: what the agreement itself allows, what the law requires it to keep, and whatever sits inside standard backups.

There's no stated maximum backup retention window, and the agreement doesn't spell out a self serve export tool for your prompt history or baselines.

Ask for an export before you cancel, rather than assuming your historical data will still be there to pull a month later.

What Profound's own reviewers complain about

Profound holds 4.5 out of 5 stars across more than 1,100 reviews on G2, a strong average, and one that mostly reflects agency and enterprise accounts rather than the smaller teams this article is written for.

The gap between that star rating and day to day use shows up in the same few places across independent reviews: no multi account structure for agencies running several client brands, agent credits that cap out even on paid self serve plans, and a platform reviewers describe as data heavy enough to need a dedicated analyst rather than something a generalist can run solo.

The 99 dollar plan you see everywhere isn't the plan most teams end up on

Run the math on what Profound actually charges per tracked prompt, and the gap gets sharper than the sticker price suggests.

Starter is 99 dollars for 50 prompts, or about 1.98 dollars per tracked prompt. Growth is 399 dollars for 100 prompts, or about 3.99 dollars per tracked prompt, roughly double the per prompt cost even though you're paying for two more engines, not just more volume.

Compare that to Semrush at about 3.96 dollars per prompt on its 99 dollar entry tier, or Otterly at under 2 dollars per prompt on Lite. Growth loses on both counts. Profound's Growth tier is the most expensive way to track a single prompt on this list.

Monitoring versus execution: the difference that decides whether you need a second tool anyway

Profound and most of the tools above are monitoring platforms. They tell you where you show up in an AI answer and how often. None of them, Profound included, actually rewrite your pages, publish content, or fix the technical issues keeping a bot from crawling you in the first place.

That work still happens in whatever content or SEO tool your team already runs. Dashboard first, action second. The real question isn't which visibility tool to buy, it's whether you're buying a dashboard or a to do list, and right now every tool on this page, Profound too, is closer to the dashboard.

Which Profound alternative fits your team

If you manage several client brands, Semrush or SE Ranking can avoid paying for a second seat structure on top of tools you already run for those clients.

Tight budget? Start with Otterly or AthenaHQ's free tier before spending anything.

If your team already reports to a security or compliance team, Scrunch and AthenaHQ both publish enterprise security options that Profound only opens up on its custom priced tier.

If you're only testing whether AEO is worth tracking at all before committing budget, AthenaHQ's free plan or Scrunch's 7 day trial answer that without a card on file.

And if you're already paying for Semrush or Ahrefs for ordinary SEO work, check what's already included before adding a new line item.

Frequently asked questions

What is Profound AI?

Profound is a platform that tracks how a brand appears inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and similar tools, then helps teams act on what it finds.

Is there a free Profound alternative?

AthenaHQ's Essential plan is actually free, not a time limited trial, and includes 300 credits a month across five AI engines. Scrunch AI offers a 7 day free trial with no card required if you want to test a broader engine set first.

Does Profound offer a free trial?

Yes, on the Growth plan specifically. Profound's own pricing page lists a "Try for free" option under Growth, though Starter and Enterprise don't offer one.

What is citation drift?

It's the term for how often an AI engine's answer about your brand changes between one check and the next, even when nothing about your site changed. Tools that track prompt history over time, rather than a single snapshot, are what let you actually see it happening.

Do I need a separate AI visibility tool if I already use Semrush or Ahrefs?

Not necessarily. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit and Ahrefs Brand Radar both track AI engines directly inside plans many teams already pay for, so check what's included before adding a standalone tool on top. Our Semrush alternatives and Ahrefs alternatives guides cover the base platforms these AI features sit inside.

Which Profound alternative works best for agencies managing multiple clients?

Semrush and SE Ranking both fold AI tracking into plans built around managing multiple client accounts, which sidesteps the separate login and separate bill problem several reviewers flag with Profound directly.

Where to start

None of these six match Profound feature for feature. That's the point. Profound built one thing extremely well, deep prompt level reporting for teams with the enterprise budget to turn on all nine engines, and priced everything else as a stepping stone toward that tier.

If your team isn't there yet, start with Otterly AI or AthenaHQ's free plan, and only pay for more engine coverage once you've confirmed the extra data actually changes what your team does next.
